What You Need to Know

Rhinoplasty, or nose jobs, in Beverly Hills are one of the most technically challenging procedures in the field of plastic surgery, where every fraction of a millimeter can make a visible difference. One of the most important factors in patient satisfaction is whether or not the patient and surgeon share the same aesthetic ideals, and can clearly communicate between one another the expectations and goals.

TREATMENT OVERVIEW

The nose is at the center of one’s face, and therefore is not in a position to be ignored.  The structure of the nose can either make breathing easier or harder, and the appearance of the nose can contribute to facial harmony and beauty, or detract from the face and become a focal point for all the wrong reasons.

Common reasons for having a Beverly Hills rhinoplasty include:

  • Reducing a dorsal hump
  • Refining a large, bulbous, or boxy tip
  • Correcting a drooping tip
  • Narrowing the base of the nose
  • Narrowing the overall width of the nose
  • Building a bridge in Asian, African-American, or other “ethnic” noses
  • Changing the overall shape of the nose
  • Increasing the length or projection of the nose
  • Correcting deformity that resulted from fracture or injury
  • Improving breathing (septoplasty, spreader grafts, et cetera)
  • Correcting deviated septum

Dr. Patel is very experienced in rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, including repair of fractures and reconstruction of the airway utilizing advanced techniques such as rib graft or fascia graft. There are both reconstructive and cosmetic reasons for rhinoplasty.

AT THE CLINIC

During your consultation, Dr. Patel will take time to learn more about your concerns and goals, and discuss the treatment options in detail. She will go through your medical history and perform a physical exam in order to determine the best plan to reach your goals, and make sure you are a good candidate for surgery.

THE SURGERY

The day of surgery, Dr. Patel will meet with you in the preoperative area, review the planned procedure, and go over any additional questions you may have prior to surgery.

POST-SURGERY

After surgery, you will be provided with postoperative care instructions, and instructions for followup. Dr. Patel will see you for the first postoperative visit 1-2 days after surgery, with an additional visit the week after for splint and/or suture removal if appropriate. Additional postoperative visits are typically spaced at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery is also known as a nose job, and involves improving the aesthetic appearance of the nose.

Is rhinoplasty safe?

Rhinoplasty is a safe procedure overall, though there are specific risks involved since it is a surgery.

Is a nose job worth it?

When there is a good fit between surgeon and patient, the experience can be very gratifying and life changing for the patient, and considered worth it. When the patient expectations are not met, that is when it is considered not worth it.

How are nose jobs done?

Nose jobs can be done “open”, meaning through a small incision along the columella and extended internally inside the nose, or done “closed”, where only internal incisions are used inside the nose.

How old do you have to be to get a nose job?

Rhinoplasty is generally not recommended before age 16, unless for reconstruction in the setting of trauma.

How much does a nose job cost?

The cost for rhinoplasty surgery will depend on a number of factors, including whether or not one had prior surgery or trauma, and whether or not airway reconstruction is performed at the same time. To provide you with accurate pricing information, we invite you to book a complimentary Pre-Consult Phone Call with our Patient Care Coordinator by calling 310-205-0212. During that phone call, important information will be discussed, and ballpark pricing will be provided.

How long does rhinoplasty take to heal?

It can take a full year for the nose to heal, and the swelling to resolve. In the period right after surgery, the external and internal splints are typically left in place for a week, tape is worn externally day and night for the next 2 weeks, and then the nose is taped at night only for 2 weeks.

How long after rhinoplasty can I workout?

It is advised to wait 6 weeks before resuming full workouts, and to be mindful of avoiding inadvertent injury once activities are resumed.

How do I Choose the Right Procedure for Me?

When you go for a consultation in Beverly Hills, be prepared to discuss what bothers you about your nose, and how important each of those things are. Dr. Patel will often ask you to list the top three things about your nose that you dislike or would like to change. It is okay if you do not have three things, or have more than three.

She will also go over a full history regarding any breathing difficulties you may have, including prior surgery, fractures or trauma, history of allergies, et cetera. It is essential to disclose any and all surgery and trauma to your nose, because this has a big impact on the surgical plan.

What is the difference between an open and closed rhinoplasty?

There are two approaches when performing rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty procedures in Beverly Hills. The first is an “open” approach, where a small, inverted V shaped incision is placed on the columella of the nose, and the remaining incisions are inside the nostrils. The second is a “closed” approach, where there are no external skin incisions, and everything is done through incisions inside the nostrils.

Dr. Patel prefers open rhinoplasty in most cases as it allows the best visualization and exposure without distortion, allowing the placement of very precise grafts and suture techniques. In smaller cases, or those not involving much tip work, a closed approach may be utilized instead. Dr. Patel assesses each nose individually to determine the best approach for that particular patient and uses the one that she feels will allow her to achieve the best possible long-term result.

Will Insurance Cover a Rhinoplasty?

Insurance providers will cover Beverly Hills nose job procedures they deem to be medically necessary. Regarding the nose, portions that may be covered by insurance are correcting a deviated septum (or septoplasty), repairing a nasal fracture or deformity from a nasal fracture, correcting breathing problems by reconstructing the nasal airway (including at times fascia grafts or cartilage grafts taken from the ear or rib), and treating hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates.

If any of these things apply to your case, one can submit for pre-authorization. If approved, it may result in lower out-of-pocket costs if some portions are covered by insurance.

What Should I Expect after Rhinoplasty Surgery in Beverly Hills?

When you wake up from surgery, you will have a splint on the outside of your nose, soft silicone splints inside the nose (that have openings to breathe through), and a piece of gauze above your upper lip (“mustache dressing”) to catch any blood or mucus draining from the nose.

Dr. Patel will see you in Beverly Hills on the day following a rhinoplasty surgery to change the mustache dressing, gently clean any dried blood or mucus from around the nares, and check the donor sites for any bleeding, fluid collection, or other overnight concerns. Your next visit is one week after surgery, at which time typically the internal and external splints are removed. In select cases, they may be removed at a later date.

Stitches at the columella are also removed at one week. The nose is then taped with brown paper tape. You will be instructed how to tape, and should keep the tape on at all times for the first two weeks. Dr. Patel will see you again the following week to remove any staples (if you had a fascia graft harvested from the scalp), and then two weeks later.

After two weeks, typically you may transition to night-time taping only. The follow-up visits are then spread out less frequently thereafter. The schedule is adjusted based on doctor/patient preferences and needs.
